It was the perfect time for a bluebonnet photo shoot.
Lately I’d been thinking of the book, Nature, Man and Woman by Alan Watts and what he wrote about humanity’s place in the natural world and the relation between spirit and body. For the longest, I’d been obsessed with the name of one of the chapters, The World as Ecstasy.
It was something I wanted to capture from this young woman; I could see it in her, who had wanted a bluebonnet photo shoot.
We met at a location outside of Austin and began working through a standard session flow.
Rather than directing, my technique depends on talking, asking questions, or with me sharing something I’d read to help tap into the exact emotion I wanted expressed through face and body language.
We were mindful of the wildflowers around us. We were mindful of the flowery print on her dress.
I began sharing with her quotes by Alan Watts, on how the divine world was no other than the everyday world and we were by blue bonnets by this point and that was when she showed just how much joy and happiness she was experiencing in the moment.
The midday sun added to the sense. Her eyes wide open then squinting against the blinding sun, all expressing, through her squint in the moment, the world was an ecstasy.
In the flowers the divine world was the everyday world.
Later in the day we came upon a bed of daisies. I photographed her as she goofed off.
